Aarhus Area Information

Welcome to Aarhus - the city with everything you could dream of.There is an energetic beat of the pulse in the vibrant city of Aarhus. With a student population of more than 40,000, Aarhus is Denmark’s youngest city – with its sights set firmly on the future. At the same time, however, we keep the past very much alive here in Aarhus, with the oldest city quarters being some of the most atmospheric, bustling and trend-setting in the city. Enjoy yourself going shopping, relaxing at one of the city’s many cafés, or strolling in the woods or along the sandy beaches before taking your pick among the generous selection of restaurants which the city has to offer. Aarhus is also a centre of art and culture.
The original city grew up around the mouth of the Aarhus Ã… river. Here the Vikings decided to settle because of the location's excellent potential as a harbour and trading position. In 1847 a major expansion of the harbour was begun. This work was completed in 1861 which coincided with the opening of the first section of the railway line in Jutland between Aarhus and the town of Randers in 1862. Aarhus became an important centre for goods and transport, thereby forming the basis for the development of the city into Denmark's second-largest city with the country's second-largest harbour.

Today Aarhus has a population of approximately 300,000 inhabitants, a very active business community, a vibrant educational environment consisting of a number of different institutions of higher education, including the University of Aarhus. The city has a wealth of excellent restaurants, a fascinating café environment, and a rich musical culture with the Concert Hall, the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra, and the Danish National Opera counting among its many offers.
